Ford Reclaimed The Nürburgring Record, But Corvette Won't Fight Back

Chevrolet Corvette performance boss Tony Roma shifts focus to Pikes Peak while leaving the door open for a future Nürburgring return.

Ford and Chevrolet are trading Nürburgring headlines again, but they are not chasing the same record.

The Mustang GTD Competition lapped the Nordschleife in 6:40.835 with Dirk Müller behind the wheel. That time undercuts the Corvette ZR1X's 6:49.275 production-car lap set in July 2025 by about eight and a half seconds.

Earlier this year, the street-legal Mustang GTD set a 6:52.072 production-class record at the Nordschleife with Müller driving, before Ford returned with the sharper Competition build in March 2026.

Tony Roma, General Motors' executive chief engineer for Corvette and performance cars, says his team will not be booking another flight to Germany anytime soon.

Ford's latest run sits in a different category from Chevrolet's. The Mustang GTD Competition's 6:40.835 appears in the Prototypes / Pre-Production vehicles category, while the Corvette ZR1X's 6:49.275 is listed under Production and Sports Cars. Chevrolet's other 2025 Nordschleife efforts include a 7:11.826 for the Z06 and a 6:50.763 for the ZR1, all recorded at the same circuit.

That gap between prototype and production status affects how the runs compare. The GTD Competition time comes from a pre-production development car while the Corvette's laps represent the fastest American production cars.

Roma does not dispute what Ford has done. "The lap time was amazing, and at the time it was the fastest American car around the Ring, and look, I think it's a time we're super proud of," he said, referring to the Corvette's own sub-seven-minute run. Chevrolet had not posted an official Nürburgring lap in 13 years before that attempt. The team treated it like a full race weekend, with Michelin engineers and battery-analysis specialists on hand.

That context shows Chevrolet's lap was not a casual drive-by. Roma described it as proof of what the broader organization could pull off for a series-production car.

Ford's prototype-grade response simply arrived faster and sharper than Corvette expected, even if it lives in a different column in the Nürburgring record book.

Corvette Chooses Pikes Peak Over A Nürburgring Rematch

"I'm not planning on running back and tit-for-tat 'look at what we can do' to answer what they did," Roma said, addressing the obvious question head-on. "I don't view it as a 'I have to run back to the Nürburgring and answer what Ford did.'"

Chevrolet's attention is already pointed at a different mountain, literally.

The ZR1X ran the 2026 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 9:30.104 with driver JR Hildebrand, a run Roma says was planned before anyone at Chevrolet knew what Ford's Nürburgring time would be. Ford showed up there too: its electric SuperVan 4.2 prototype, a Transit-based Ford Performance project, took the overall win in 8:18.202 and reset the event's electric benchmark.

Pikes Peak gives Corvette a showcase on home turf rather than a rematch framed around Ford's prototype lap. Roma described the hill climb as a chance to demonstrate the car's capability at one of America's own motorsport landmarks. It is a different statement than trading lap times at a circuit overseas.

None of this closes the door permanently. Ford's own record hunting has included multiple vehicles over the past decade, including high-profile Ford GT development runs in the late 2010s and early 2020s, and Chevrolet has not ruled out another Nordschleife attempt down the line.

For now, Roma's team is content to let the 6:49.275 production-car record stand while Ford's 6:40.835 sits atop the prototype and pre-production chart.
