More evidence is piling up that indicates Dodge is almost ready to revive the Hemi-powered Charger. Earlier this year, a report alleged a new Charger SRT Hellcat was in the early stages of development, possibly returning for the 2028 model year, and that appears to be true.

A new Automotive News report alleges that Dodge will begin production of a new Charger Hellcat, with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine, by the end of 2027, and Dodge is apparently betting big. According to the publication, Dodge has supposedly already told suppliers it plans to build 12,000 Charger Hellcats per year.

If the report is true, Dodge will likely reveal the new Charger SRT Hellcat by next August at the annual Roadkill Nights. It’s the event where the automaker unveiled the new Charger Super Bee with a 600-horsepower inline-six.

Motor1 reached out to Dodge about the report and a spokesperson told us:

'We do not comment on future product plans.'

Dodge stopped building Hemi-powered Chargers (and Challengers) at the end of 2023. Production of the successor, a two- and four-door Charger, began at the end of 2024, but as a battery-electric vehicle.

The first new combustion-powered Chargers wouldn't begin rolling off the assembly line until late 2025, but they lacked the one thing that made their predecessor so popular: Hemi V8 engines. The Charger currently comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine in two tunes.

Dodge has also staggered its rollout over the last couple of years, and that decision is reflected in the sales. Through September, the automaker has sold 8,029 combustion-powered Chargers in both body styles, a 330 percent increase from a year ago.

Sales for the model will likely keep rising, but they will still be far below the previous generation. In the platform’s final year of production, Dodge sold 75,920 Charger sedans and 44,960 Challenger coupes.

What’s Next For Dodge?

Beyond the rumored return of the Charger Hellcat, Dodge is expanding its lineup with two new models. One is the new halo model, while the other is the GLH crossover, which will have an SRT variant.

In August, Dodge CEO Matt McAlear told Motor1 that the new GLH will target the "sedan, hot-hatch-type market." We expect the non-SRT variant to start below $40,000.

At the time, McAlear would not elaborate on when we could see a V8-powered Charger, but Stellantis’ FaSTLAne 2030 roadmap earlier this year indicated the brand was developing a Charger SRT variant. He told us:

'We haven't even started talking about what SRT's working on. So, make no mistake, this isn't the finish line. We'll keep pushing. We'll keep going.’

The new SRT Charger Hellcat will reportedly have a more aggressive hood scoop, a massive rear wing, and Hemi V8 engine producing over 700 hp. The supercharged 6.2-liter that Ram is using in the revived TRX and the new Rumble Bee makes 777 hp.
