BMW has told its own managers to prepare for AI doing their jobs. On September 30, the automaker laid out a restructuring plan that ties artificial intelligence directly to smaller executive ranks and a tighter model lineup.
The update, confirmed through BMW's own statement, covers everything from production software to which cars reach showrooms. Here is what changes for the company, and eventually for buyers.
BMW's AI Vehicle Strategy And The Planned Management Cuts

BMW Group says it will expand artificial intelligence use across development, purchasing, production and aftersales, with the explicit goal of making those divisions run more efficiently. The plan folds AI expansion, management reductions and two new model launches into a single profitability push.
CFO Walter Mertl described the shift in blunt terms. He called agentic AI, software that can act on tasks with minimal human input, a "game-changer for more agile and efficient development, more efficient structures and faster decision-making." BMW already uses AI in manufacturing through standardized IT and data models. It wants those tools eventually capable of end-to-end support across vehicle development.
The headline figure is a 20 percent cut to divisions and management roles, targeted for completion by mid-2027.
BMW Group says a comparable reduction will hit the organizational levels below management too, so the restructuring reaches well past the executive suite.
That management reduction is separate from the voluntary redundancy program already underway in Germany, which Reuters reports could affect roughly 8,000 positions. BMW reached an agreement with its Works Council back in July covering job losses tied to the AI transition, ahead of this week's broader announcement.
No 2 Series Active Tourer Successor

BMW signals that buyers will eventually see this restructuring in a thinner model range. As part of its plan to review and reduce the number of variants, the company points to the 2 Series Active Tourer, its compact MPV-style model, as one example that will not receive a successor even though the current generation remains in production.
BMW isn't simply shrinking.
It's also redirecting resources toward new launches, including a compact entry-level electric vehicle focused on Europe and planned for 2028 as part of the Neue Klasse rollout. That timing would put the brand's cheapest EV on sale roughly two years after this restructuring is set to conclude.

The logic connects directly to the AI push outlined above. Fewer variants mean fewer development paths for BMW's engineering teams to manage, which frees up capacity for the AI-driven processes Mertl described.
BMW has not detailed which other models and specific trims face cuts beyond citing the Active Tourer. The automaker has previously discussed which nameplates carry lower brand value, a framework that likely shapes which models survive the leaner lineup BMW is now building toward.
