Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant started building the second-generation 2027 Atlas this past summer, and the first units reach US dealerships this month. It is the biggest changeover the Tennessee factory has handled since it opened.

The new three-row SUV carries a redesigned exterior, an updated cabin, and a reworked powertrain. For the workers on the line and for Volkswagen's US sales targets, this launch carries more weight than a routine model refresh.

Volkswagen began building the redesigned Atlas at Chattanooga in the summer of 2026, swapping over a line that had run the outgoing generation since 2016. Roughly 4,000 people work at the plant, and most of them touch the Atlas program in some form.

The redesigned 2027 Atlas drops a turbocharged 2.0-liter EA888 evo5 four-cylinder under the hood, rated at 282 horsepower. Volkswagen calls it the strongest engine the nameplate has carried since the model's debut.

According to Automotive News, the relaunch carries strategic weight for Volkswagen well beyond Tennessee, tying the brand's US fortunes more tightly to a single American factory than at almost any point in its history here.

The Atlas Cross Sport, the two-row sibling built on the same line, is not following immediately. Volkswagen has penciled in a first-quarter 2027 launch for that variant, so Chattanooga will run the three-row body alone for several months before the lineup fills out.

When The New Atlas Reaches Dealers

Volkswagen has set October 2026 as the arrival window for the redesigned Atlas at US dealerships, matching the timeline the brand laid out when it first showed the production model. That is a tight turnaround from a summer assembly start.

Dealers should have the three-row version on lots first, with the smaller Atlas Cross Sport variant following roughly a quarter later. Buyers cross-shopping three-row SUVs this fall will find the new Atlas before its two-row counterpart shows up.

Pricing and trim details for the redesigned lineup arrived ahead of the on-sale date, giving shoppers a look at where the new Atlas lands against rivals before the first units ever reached a showroom floor.

Chattanooga's Long Run With The Atlas Nameplate

Chattanooga has built every Atlas sold in the US since December 2016, when Volkswagen chose the plant specifically to develop a three-row SUV for North American buyers. That original launch triggered a $900 million expansion of the factory.

The math behind that bet has paid off in volume. Volkswagen says Chattanooga has assembled more than 1 million Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles since the nameplate arrived there, and by its 15th anniversary in 2026 the plant had already passed 1.85 million total vehicles produced.

Before the Atlas took over, Chattanooga had produced the Passat and the electric ID.4, with ID.4 assembly at the plant running from 2022 until Volkswagen ended that line in mid-April 2026.

A decade in, the Atlas remains the clearest example of Volkswagen building a vehicle in America specifically for American buyers, and the Chattanooga workforce is the one that has carried it through two full model generations.
