The new gas-powered BMW 3 Series has arrived, debuting in the US with two powertrains: a turbocharged four-cylinder and an inline-six. In Europe, however, the new 3 Series is missing one very important engine: the diesel.

Two separate BMW spokespeople confirmed to Motor1 and Motor1 Germany that the 3 Series diesel will no longer be part of the European lineup. The change applies to the latest 3 Series, which arrives for the 2027 model year.

That means familiar models like the 320d and other diesel variants are officially on their way out.

BMW Is Sticking With Multiple Powertrains

Even without a diesel option in Europe, BMW is sticking with a multi-powertrain strategy for the new 3 Series. The company will continue offering gasoline engines alongside the all-electric i3.

BMW has also confirmed that a plug-in-hybrid version of the next-generation 3 Series will arrive in Europe in 2027. The automaker previously said the new 3 Series family would continue to offer plug-in-hybrid power, although it hasn't announced specific details about the new setup yet.

BMW also hasn't confirmed whether the next-generation plug-in-hybrid 3 Series will be offered in the United States.

The Diesel 3 Series Isn't Gone Yet

If you're in Europe and want a diesel 3 Series, there's still time.

The current-generation 3 Series continues to offer diesel power, including the 320d. Meanwhile, the next-generation car is scheduled to enter production in the second half of 2026, with BMW currently putting its new-generation combustion-powered 3 Series through final testing ahead of its launch.

Once the new generation arrives, though, the diesel option will disappear. That means the end of the road for models like the M340d, too. BMW has already confirmed that the next 3 Series' range-topping six-cylinder combustion model will be the M350 xDrive.

For European 3 Series buyers, then, the diesel era is coming to an end.
