Honda has not built a new assembly plant in the United States in roughly two decades. That streak may be about to end, though the automaker itself is not ready to say so.

According to a Nikkei Asia report, Honda Motor is deep into talks over a hybrid vehicle plant in Ohio, with production potentially starting in 2030. American Honda's own spokesperson says no final decision has been made.

Honda's Ohio Hybrid Plant Is Not Confirmed

The report describes Honda as being in the final stage of preparations for a new plant dedicated to hybrid vehicles.

Honda's American spokesperson pushed back on the idea that this is a done deal, saying no decision has been made regarding a new US plant. That is a cautious line for a project already being described as historic.

Honda has also pointed to its usual playbook of expanding output through flexible production lines and existing facilities before committing to brand-new capacity. A standalone plant would be a departure from that pattern.

The timing lines up with Honda's broader pivot. After dialing back its electric vehicle ambitions, the company has relied more heavily on hybrids across cars like the CR-V and Accord, and a dedicated hybrid plant would solidify that shift.

The Reported $2,500,000,000 Timeline

Nikkei Asia's figures put the investment at 300,000,000,000 to 400,000,000,000 yen, or roughly $1,900,000,000 to $2,530,000,000. That range would make it one of Honda's largest single US manufacturing commitments in years.

Construction could reportedly begin as early as 2027, with the plant targeting an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles once production ramps up. Nikkei Asia's reporting puts that output starting in 2030, though state subsidy negotiations are still said to be unresolved.

The same report also points to what the plant might build. Output could include large Honda and Acura SUVs, a segment where Honda has previously turned to outside factories for extra capacity. That would be a change toward dedicated in-house production.

If the Ohio plant does go forward, it would be Honda's first new North American assembly facility in about 20 years, a milestone that explains why the story is getting attention well before any contract is finalized. Whether the state subsidy talks close the gap remains the open question.

Motor1's Take: A new Honda plant needs a local supplier base that can build hybrid powertrains and a trained workforce to assemble them. Securing supplier contracts and training programs is the quieter hurdle before shovels hit dirt.
