Acura is putting the MDX Type S on ice. The brand confirmed to Automotive News that production of its turbo 3.0-liter V6 flagship crossover will pause after the 2026 model year, and the reason is not weak demand.

Spokesperson Andrew Quillin pointed to regulatory uncertainty tied to the EPA's incoming Tier 4 emissions framework. Acura cannot yet say when, or if, the Type S comes back for a later model year.

What Happens To The MDX Lineup After 2026

The pause hits one trim, not the whole SUV. Acura's East Liberty, Ohio plant keeps building standard MDX models, and the brand told Automotive News this is a hiatus, not a cancellation notice for the nameplate.

Dealers should still have Type S inventory into early 2027, so shoppers who want the 355-hp version are not locked out immediately. It is the same holding pattern Honda used when it recently paused Civic Si production over similar certification pressure.

What disappears with the Type S is the turbocharged J30AC V6, an engine shared only with the TLX Type S. Once both cars lose it, Acura's lineup goes without a factory-boosted six-cylinder for the first time in years.

Acura has not confirmed whether Type S styling or chassis tuning migrates to lower MDX trims, but the brand has indicated the rest of the range is expected to inherit some of that look. That would echo how Acura handled the discontinued ZDX, folding distinct styling cues into surviving models rather than losing them outright.

Why EPA Tier 4 Rules Are The Real Culprit

The rule at the center of this is the EPA's multipollutant and Tier 4 framework for light and medium-duty vehicles, covering model years 2027 through 2032. It is already finalized law.

What is shifting is timing. The EPA proposed in May 2026 to push the Tier 4 phase-in from 2027 to 2029, while keeping Tier 3 standards in place for 2027 and 2028 in the meantime.

That back-and-forth is exactly the kind of uncertainty a low-volume performance trim cannot absorb. Certifying an engine twice, once for a rule that might apply and again if it gets delayed, is not worth it for a niche seller like the Type S.

Honda faces the same math across its lineup after already trimming EV plans, a pattern visible in how it recently canceled three planned electric vehicles. Whether the MDX Type S returns depends on how the EPA finalizes the schedule, and Acura is not promising a date.

Motor1's Take: This pause shows how regulatory wavering can sink niche performance trims. If you want Type S characteristics, act now and consider comparable rivals while the market adjusts.

Next, watch the EPA's final timeline. Acura's choice to fold Type S styling into other MDX trims will decide whether that look survives.
