Volkswagen ID. Polo Is Sold Out, 30,000 Orders Leave Buyers Waiting

Strong demand for the Volkswagen ID. Polo across trims has created a ten-month European waitlist and turned production capacity into the real bottleneck.

Volkswagen has confirmed the ID. Polo is sold out across Europe before a single customer car has hit the road. More than 30,000 orders have piled up since order books opened in April 2026.

Buyers configuring a car today face at least a ten-month wait, according to the head of a major VW dealership group via Automobilwoche. The shortage now stretches from the entry Trend trim all the way up to the GTI variant due this fall.

Orders, Trims And European Demand

The math behind the sellout starts with price. Volkswagen configured the entry ID. Polo Trend model from €24,995 ($27,200), pairing a 37 kWh LFP battery with an 114 horsepower motor for a WLTP range of 323 kilometers (201 miles).

Step up to the Life trim and the starting price rises to €33,795 ($36,800), with a larger 52 kWh NMC battery available for buyers who want extra range. DC fast charging tops out at 88 kW, enough to take the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in 23 minutes.

"The ID. Polo has significantly exceeded original expectations, particularly in Germany," a company spokesperson said. Volkswagen is also readying a hotter version, the ID. Polo GTI which brings 223 horsepower of output and pre-sales starting this autumn at just under €39,000 ($42,500).

Demand has not been limited to one trim level. Orders span the full lineup, from budget-focused Trend buyers chasing a sub-€25,000 ($27,200) EV to enthusiasts eyeing the GTI's added punch, which points to broad appeal rather than a single standout configuration.

How The Waitlist Reached Ten Months And Beyond

"The entire ID. Polo range is sold out, and the waiting time is at least ten months," the dealership group's head said. That timeline applies to individually configured orders rather than preconfigured stock cars sitting on dealer lots.

Production capacity is the real bottleneck. The ID. Polo shares its Martorell, Spain assembly line and MEB entry platform with the Cupra Raval, and both compete for the same build slots that came online this June.

Volkswagen's broader small-EV push treats this segment as a volume play rather than a niche experiment. That means the ID. Polo backlog stems from limited factory capacity rather than weak demand, even as the wait stretches well into next year.

Motor1's Take: Delivery order now depends on production capacity. Buyers who take dealer stock or choose simpler specs will move ahead of custom-orders. Watch whether Volkswagen reallocates output, pauses orders or adds shifts. Those moves will change which buyers win and which keep waiting.
