A Volkswagen Polo rear-ended a Bugatti Tourbillon prototype in the Sierra Nevada region of Spain, and someone caught the whole thing on camera. The Tourbillon previews a €3.8 million ($4.1 million) production hypercar, and it drove away with a dented rear end.
The camouflaged prototype had braked for a red light near roadworks when the Polo, following too close, failed to stop in time. Nobody was hurt. The damage looked cosmetic, but on a car built almost entirely from carbon fiber, cosmetic still gets expensive fast.
Volkswagen Polo Hits Bugatti Tourbillon Prototype
The Tourbillon involved was not a customer car. Bugatti was running it through testing in high altitude and scorching heat, conditions engineers use to stress a car's cooling and chassis before it ever reaches a buyer. That is standard practice for any automaker finishing validation work before a car goes on sale, hypercar or otherwise.
What made this crash so interesting is the mismatch. Bugatti's production Tourbillon runs a naturally aspirated V16 built with Cosworth, 8.3 liters displacing 986 horsepower on its own. Add three electric motors and total output climbs to 1,775 horsepower, matched to carbon-ceramic brakes and tires built for triple-digit stops.
The Polo that hit it starts at 20,370 euros in Spain for the 1.0 MPI with a five-speed manual, according to Volkswagen's own Spanish pricing. It rides on narrow, eco-focused tires and steel brakes, nothing like what the Tourbillon carries underneath its camouflage wrap. Essentially, what happened on that Spanish mountain road is that a hypercar prototype worth millions took a hit from the cheapest car in its maker's own lineup.
Bugatti Tourbillon Testing In Spain
Prototype hypercars end up on public roads because there is no substitute for real traffic, real heat, and real elevation changes. A test track tells engineers how a car behaves in a controlled setting; a mountain pass in southern Spain tells them how it behaves when a red light and unpredictable drivers get involved.
That exposure comes with a cost. A camouflaged prototype does not look like a hypercar from behind, and drivers following too closely often have no idea what is sitting in front of them until it is too late. This one probably was not the last mixed-traffic test Bugatti runs before the finished car reaches buyers.

The Tourbillon itself has been visible in other testing footage circulating this year, including clips of Bugatti engineers tuning its V16 exhaust note.
Motor1's Take: Part of the fascination here is how a one-off development car worth millions ends up sharing the same stoplight and the same mistakes as a budget city hatchback. The Tourbillon is engineered for breathless numbers and perfect conditions, yet its fate in this moment depends on an everyday driver in an economy car paying attention in roadworks.
