- Future Plan 2030 cuts roughly 50,000 additional jobs.
- The plan halves the group's model lineup by 2035.
- Four German plants, Emden, Zwickau, Hanover, and Neckarsulm, face losing current production runs between 2031 and 2034.
Volkswagen's supervisory board did not just nod along to another leaked memo this time. In early 2026 it unanimously approved the comprehensive Future Plan 2030, and on September 3, 2026 it backed a detailed restructuring package that turns earlier targets into specific capacity and cost cuts.
The new package puts roughly 50,000 job reductions on top of cuts already underway, aims to streamline the group's model lineup by up to half by 2035, and puts four German plants under review. CEO Oliver Blume called the broader Future Plan "a strong signal for the future of the Volkswagen Group."

Future Plan 2030: What The Job Cuts Actually Mean
The headline number is 50,000 additional positions, including management roles, layered on top of roughly 50,000 cuts Volkswagen had already agreed to earlier this year. That pushes total workforce reduction across the group toward six figures by 2030.
Volkswagen has not published a brand-by-brand breakdown yet. The company says its European production capacity now runs more than 500,000 units above what it actually needs. That gap has been building as demand softened and competition, especially from Chinese EV makers, intensified.
Blume's internal messaging, detailed in a memo circulated to staff in late August, warned that roughly half the cuts would land in Germany specifically. That is not a rounding error for a country where Volkswagen has long been treated as an industrial anchor.
Volkswagen also says it plans to divest or realign about a third of its non-strategic activities, a phrase vague enough to cover everything from software units to joint ventures, and specific enough to suggest the company has already picked its targets. Blume has separately described the broader situation as critical, language rarely used this bluntly by a sitting VW chief.

Halved Lineups, Four Plants In Limbo
Volkswagen intends to streamline its lineup by up to 50 percent by 2035. It targets a 75 percent cut in trim and variant complexity so it can focus engineering and marketing on fewer, higher-volume models.
Four plants, Emden, Zwickau, Hanover, and Neckarsulm, are flagged in the restructuring plan as locations where auto production is at risk. Reuters and other outlets identify these sites with models including the Audi A5, A6, A8, and E-Tron GT, plus the Q4 E-Tron, Cupra Born, and several Volkswagen ID electric models.
Volkswagen has stopped short of confirming outright closures. The company says it is studying alternative uses for the four sites and has not announced a detailed timetable for when current vehicle production might end or what would replace it.

Motor1's Take: Employees and suppliers near the affected plants will feel the impact first. Local economies and union talks will set the pace.
Watch which nameplates are cut and what the company proposes for plant reuse as those moves will determine supplier contracts and timelines.
