The Next-Gen Nissan Z Is Still Years Away

Until then, the automaker will focus on creating special editions of the low-volume sports car.

The Breakdown:

  • The next-generation Nissan Z is still several years away.
  • It won’t arrive until sometime after 2030.
  • Until then, Nissan plans to focus on creating special editions.

Nissan won’t launch the next-generation Z anytime soon. Instead, the automaker plans to focus on creating special editions of its sports car before even discussing what comes next.

Speaking with The Drive, Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan America’s senior vice president, chief product and planning officer, told the publication that the automaker plans to introduce heritage-based special editions “between now and say the next three years,” adding, “And then we’re actively talking about what the next generation will look like.”

The Z is not a huge seller for the brand, but the automaker sold more than 5,000 coupes last year, up a whopping 73.4 percent. Sales are expected to dip in 2026 as Nissan launches the 2027 model. The company is reducing production to better meet customer demand because of the vehicle’s niche appeal.

What do you think?

We expect the new Z will arrive after the next-generation GT-R debuts, which Nissan should reveal before 2030. The current-generation Z has only been on sale for four model years, arriving in the United States for 2023, and it just recently received its mid-cycle refresh, which we will get for 2027.

Motor1’s Take: If we had to bet, we would wager the next-generation Nissan Z will go on sale for the 2032 model year. The automaker just gave the sports car its mid-cycle refresh for 2027, which should be on sale for the next four years, taking the current car’s lifecycle into the early 2030s.
